“I dive as much as I can”

-Peter Benchley

I have been a water rat since my parents tossed me into the YMCA pool when I was six months old. Since then my life has been lived either in, on, or under the water. As a youngster I was fascinated with the exploits of Jacques Cousteau and the Wild Kingdom nature shows.

Around 1987 my family vacationed in Maui. My brother and I took a basic resort course. We had an amazing experience but as two brothers will do we screwed around so much I am shocked neither of us got hurt. In 2006 I was hospitalized for over a week. The lifestyle I was living had taken a toll on me. I needed a changed and I promised myself that I would live a more intentional life. Five weeks later my wife and I completed our PADI open water diver certification. I was hooked.

Combing my passion for diving and my career as a psychotherapist I developed an approach utilizing diving as an intervention to work with my clients. In 2010 I completed my training as a NAUI dive instructor. This gave me freedom and support in the dive community to evolve my work with clients. In 2013 I started Recovery Scuba in Boca Raton, FL. The program worked with clients who were in early recovery from substance use disorders. We worked with dozens of clients who almost all, to this day, remain in sustained recovery and continue to dive. In 2017 I closed Recovery Scuba and refocused my attention back towards Michigan and the Great Lakes.

Since that time I have added additional dive certification agencies to my training offerings. I am a Professional Scuba Schools (PSS) instructor, a Scuba Educators International Instructor (SEI) and a Scuba Diving International (SDI) instructor.
